WLE Steering Committee

  • Barbara Schreiner

    Barbara Schreiner is on the WLE Steering Committee. She is also the Executive Director of the Pegasys Institute, Board Chair of the Water Research Commission (WRC) and a board member of the International Water Management Institute (IWMI).

  • Brent Swallow

    Brent Swallow is Professor of Agricultural and Environmental Economics at the University of Alberta, Canada. He is a member of the WLE Steering Committee and specializes in payment for ecosystems services.

  • Charlotte de Fraiture

    Charlotte de Fraiture is a professor of water and land development at UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, Delft, the Netherlands. She is a member of the WLE Steering Committee. 

  • Izabella Koziell

    Izabella Koziell is the Program Director for the CGIAR Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE) and is an ex officio member of the WLE steering committee.

  • Joan Kagwanja

    Joan C. Kagwanja

    Dr. Joan Cuka Kagwanja is the Chief of the Land Policy Initiative, an initiative of the African Union Commission (AUC), Economic Commission (ECA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB). She is a member of the WLE Steering Committee.

  • Johan Rockström

    Johan Rockström is a professor in environmental science with emphasis on water resources and global sustainability at Stockholm University and the executive director of Stockholm Resilience Centre. He serves as the chair of WLE’s steering committee.

  • Mihir Shah

    Mihir Shah is president of the Bharat Rural Livelihood Foundation and a member of the WLE Steering Committee.

  • Olcay Ünver

    Olcay Ünver is responsible for managing water, land and soil-related activities and programs at FAO, mainstreaming water across the various sectors and disciplines, and cooperating with partners and stakeholders within and outside the UN system. He is a member of the WLE Steering Committee.

  • Adam Hunt

    Adam is the head of global communications, knowledge management, and engagement for WLE.

  • Amali Dommanige

    Amali Dommanige is the Senior Program Officer for WLE and oversees various programatic operational services.

    David Rider Smith is the monitoring, evaluation and learning manager for WLE.

  • Izabella Koziell

    Izabella Koziell is the Program Director for the CGIAR Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE) and is an ex officio member of the WLE steering committee.

  • Kim Geheb

    Kim Geheb is the leader of WLE in the Greater Mekong region.

  • Sharon Perera

    Sharon Perera

    Sharon Perera is the Program Assistant for WLE. Prior to joining WLE, Sharon was Executive Officer to the Deputy Director General of the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and the Personal Assistant of the Director of the Challenge Program on Water and Food (CPWF).

  • Anthony Whitbread

    Dr. Anthony Whitbread leads the research program Resilient Dryland Systems for the International Crops Research Institute of the Semi-arid Tropics. He is co-leaders of WLE's research theme on Sustainable Land and Water Solutions.

  • Claudia Ringler

    Claudia Ringler is deputy division director of the Environment and Production Technology Division at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). She co-leads WLE's research theme on Managing Resource Variability and Competing Use.

  • Daniel McGonigle

    Daniel McGonigle runs the productive and resilient farms, forests and landscapes initiative at Bioversity International. He is a member of the WLE Management Committee.

    Keith Shepherd is a Principal Soil Scientist and Science Domain Leader of Land Health Decision Unit at ICRAF.  He is also the co-leader of the Regenerating Degraded Landscapes Research Theme for WLE.

  • Marielle Dubbeling

    Marielle Dubbeling is the Director of the RUAF Foundation-Global partnership on Sustainable Urban Agriculture and Food Systems. She co-leads WLE's research theme on Rural-Urban Linkages.

  • Matthew McCartney

    Matthew McCartney

    Matthew McCartney co-leads the WLE Research Theme on Variability, Risk, and Competing Uses and is Research Group Leader for Water Futures at the International Water Management Institute (IWMI). He specializes in water resources, wetland and hydro-ecological studies.

  • Pay Drechsel

    Pay Drechsel is Strategic Program Leader of the International Water Management Institute for Rural-Urban Linkages, and co-leads WLE's research theme on Sustaining Rural-Urban Linkages.

  • Rolf Sommer

    Rolf Sommer coleads the regenerating degraded landscapes research theme. He works on soil health and fertility, soil nutrition and crop modeling at the Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT).
