Water security is high on the international development agenda, and the time is ripe for vigorous and innovative efforts to achieve the water-related targets of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Against this background, the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) seeks highly motivated candidates for the position of Deputy Director General (Research for Development), or DDG, who show an exceptional ability to motivate, lead and manage research teams representing diverse disciplines and cultures.
IWMI is a CGIAR center focused on research for development to deliver new evidence-based approaches that contribute to water security. The DDG is responsible for IWMI’s vital contributions to the CGIAR research agenda, including the Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE), which the Institute leads.
The DDG plays a vital role in the overall management and direction of IWMI’s research program, serving as a member of the Institute’s Management Team and heading the Program Leadership Team. In these capacities, the DDG stimulates new ideas and lines of investigation; helps synthesize and communicate research findings to key stakeholders, including donors; and guides efforts to scale up innovative evidence-based approaches. The DDG will accountable for profiling IWMI’s research and securing additional resources, networking and growing IWMI’s advisory services work. These tasks form a key part of the DDG’s support for the leaders of IWMI’s strategic programs and research groups. Reporting to the Director General, the DDG is based at IWMI’s headquarters in Colombo, Sri Lanka or at one of the institute’s major regional offices in Africa.
